I am a world champion para-archer from Türkiye. As an athlete who has a disability, I was excited by the opportunity to study sport at the University of Vigo, Spain, in the faculty of sports sciences through Erasmus+.
When I learned about the inclusion and assistance Erasmus+ provides to students with disabilities, I was inspired to get involved. This extra support was the most important factor in motivating me to take the opportunity to study abroad.
Erasmus+ provided a space for me to experience freedom, where I could meet new people, get to know different cultures and have an excellent experience on my own. As a student who has physical disabilities, I saw what I can achieve when opportunities are offered thanks to Erasmus+.
My time studying at university through Erasmus+ is very precious to me. The project’s focus on inclusion was what initially caught my attention and convinced me to apply, and I found that when I made the transfer to Spain, the students and teachers at the university always tried to ensure I had an equal opportunity to get involved in every activity. Thanks to the Erasmus+ exchange programme, I gained new friendships, knowledge, and experience.
Since taking part, I have pursued my goal of becoming a sports manager in my home country, through which I have had the chance to transfer my experiences and apply what I learned at university. At my school, I apply the methods and explain the lessons that I learned in Spain to other students so that they can benefit from my Erasmus+ experience. My vision for the future is to contribute to the sports system here in Türkiye and to teach future athletes.
The Erasmus+ programme has life-changing effects, especially for people who have disabilities. The programme creates equality of opportunity through the support it provides and gives people like me the courage to do something alone. The same is true for all young people. I think everyone should have this experience.
