Through innovative and diverse models of long-term integrated cooperation, the European Universities initiative promotes common European values and a strengthened European identity, and supports the higher education institutions to make a substantial leap in quality, performance, attractiveness and international competitiveness.

The 2022 Erasmus+ European Universities call for proposals closed on 22 March.

Following the call deadline, 52 proposals have been received in total (eligibility check still to be performed) for the two topics distributed as follows:

  • 21 applications for Topic 1 “Intensification of prior deep institutional transnational cooperation”, with 144 full partners involved
  • 31 applications for Topic 2 “Development of new deep institutional transnational cooperation”, with 208 full partners involved

In total, the call attracted around 350 higher education institutions covering 33 EU Member States and third countries associated to the Erasmus+ programme. This demonstrates that the higher education community remains intensively mobilised for the roll-out of the European Universities initiative to support systemic, structural and sustainable transnational cooperation among diverse higher education institutions across Europe.

The objective set in the European strategy for universities is to reach 60 European Universities involving around 500 higher education institutions by mid-2024.
