Erasmus+

EU programme for education, training, youth and sport

Erasmus Mundus Design Measures (EMDM)

Activities funded

Funding for international partnerships of higher education institutions to design and deliver new, innovative and highly integrated joint master programmes.

Other partners with specific expertise in the area of study can also be involved as members of a funded consortium.

Difference with Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters

Note that Erasmus Mundus Design Measures (EMDM) are different from funding to run Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters programmes (EMJM). This means that

  • there is no obligation to implement an EMDM before an EMJM
  • the award of an EMDM does not imply automatic funding under EMJM
  • the completion of an EMDM project is not an award criterion for an EMJM

Applicant requirements

Funding is awarded to a single beneficiary (known as a mono-beneficiary grant agreement). The applicant should identify the other institutions taking part in the consortium when they make their application.

The international partnership of HEIs should be composed of at least three HEIs from three different countries, of which at least two must be EU Member States and third countries associated to the Programme.

Higher education institutions in Erasmus + programme countries must hold a valid Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE).

These countries are known as "EU Member States or countries associated to the Programme".

Project duration

15 months, with extension possible if justified.

Budget

€60,000 lump sum.

What is expected of funded institutions

Institutions running an Erasmus Mundus Design Measures project should deliver a master’s programme with a fully integrated curriculum. It should require all recruited students to take an exchange visit to another country, and will aim to recruit excellent candidates worldwide.

By the end of the project, all higher education institutions involved should have designed the following joint mechanisms:

  • procedures for student application, admission, selection and monitoring
  • rules and procedures for student examinations and performance evaluation
  • programme design and integrated teaching/training activities
  • common services offered to students
  • promotion and awareness-raising strategy
  • administrative and financial management by the partnership
  • a degree policy
  • draft partnership agreement
  • draft student agreement
