New European Student Card logo: a fresh look for improved access to student services

The new European Student Card (ESC) logo introduces a streamlined design that facilitates student status verification across Europe.

A layout of the new logo

What’s changing and why?

The new ESC logo, released in November, replaces the previous ESC logo, which had a separate hologram and QR code. It is sleeker and more compact, with an enhanced European dimension, and is more adaptable to both physical and digital cards.

These simpler elements aim to make it easier to implement the ESC and enable students to access services and benefits when they are on an exchange across the European Education Area.

Benefits

The new ESC logo brings several improvements that make life easier for students and card issuers alike.

Easy to implement: no complicated processes, no added costs. Higher education institutions can integrate the new logo with minimal effort, making it a win-win for card issuers.

Enhanced recognition: including the EU flag and a clear mention of the European Student Card is more than symbolic. It gives the card a clear European dimension, helping students be instantly recognised during their mobility abroad, whether they are accessing university facilities and services such as borrowing books, or off-campus services, including libraries, transportation or museums.

Flexible and space-saving: the new logo takes up less space on student cards, leaving room for other important student information. Plus, it’s adaptable to any card format—whether horizontal or vertical, digital or physical.

Secure and fast verification: the QR code links to a secure platform, enabling instant verification of student status. This ensures quick access to services without having to manage multiple cards.

Future-proof: designed to work with both physical and digital student cards, the new ESC logo is ready for the future of student mobility and identification, whatever form that might take.

How the transition works

The old ESC logo (hologram and QR code) and the new logo will be valid for another 3 years until  December 2027.As of 1 January 2028, only European Student Cards (ESCs) showing the new ESC logo will be considered valid.

We encourage higher education institutions issuing ESCs to adopt the new logo as soon as possible. Early implementation will allow card issuers to benefit from the increased operational efficiency the new logo provides to card issuers, ensuring a smoother transition and implementation.
